Prepare to meet my maker

I received another award yesterday, and while I was doing my little happy dance I suddenly felt like a bit of a fraud. The award is much appreciated (thank you, Margaret!) but a little undeserved, I feel, in the face of all that talent coursing through the blogsphere these days.

Every time I pop into one of your kitchens, there's always something amazing cooking. A Brioche casually laid out on the table; a scene straight out of one of those glossy cookbooks. How?

Do you fit in pastry making classes between sending the kids off to school and board meetings? Did you take Plating 101 in school? Do tiny Matt Armendariz elves live under your sink?

So you can imagine now nervous I am to bring you my first-ever breadmaker bread (I saw that shudder). C'mon, give a gal a break. It's not half bad, is it?

Wholewheat and Polenta Loaf

Place 220ml water and 2 tablespoons of honey in your breadmaker. Cover the liquid completely with 25g polenta, 25g white bread flour and 325g wholewheat flour. In separate corners of the pan add 1 teaspoon of sea salt and 1.5 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Make a small indent in the centre of the flour (but not down to the liquid) and add 3/4 teaspoon of instant yeast. Set the machine to the wholewheat setting, medium crust. Press start.

Now consider how long that took, in contrast to my Heart of Wheat bread.

Damn you technology for taking the pain out of my pain!
Will there be no turning back now that I can bake bread in my sleep (there's the coolest delay timer feature *sigh*)? Will the lure of waking up to the smell of freshly baked bread tempt me away from the path of righteous kneading?

Stay tuned, while Dee contemplates the future of bread in her home... in Singapore. And I'll see you back here on Wednesday with something yummy, and hopefully a brand new madeline pan.

Meanwhile, I'm sending this to the super talented Jude who's hosting Bread Baking Day 13. If he'll have my humble loaf, that is.

lol - funny post dee - congratulations on the award - you totally deserve it (although I didn't check what it was for, but I'm going to assume something nice ;)

oh, and the bread looks lovely !

Hey what a gool loaf with polenta? That is very interesting, thanks for sharing!

Congrats on the award, Dee. It's always cool when someone notices all the hard work you put into something.

Speaking of work, I see no problem with breadmaker bread. That's like shunning people who use a mixer to make angel food cake. Use technology to your advantage.

The bread looks awesome my hippie friend :)

Lol...gimme a bread machine any day. The loaf looks lovely, and please don't be apologetic...making your loaf (even in the bread machine) is far more than most people do.

Kevin said...

Nice looking bread. I like the sound of using polenta in bread.

Dee said...

Aww, Sagan *blush*

Thanks Kittie :)

Noble pig: The polenta makes gives it a lovely crunch. Mmmm

Adam: Purists would be appalled, heh heh. Maybe I should make my Kraft Mac & Cheese casserole next ;)

Thanks Bharti!

Thanks Kevin, as I mentioned to Noble Pig, the Polenta gives it a surprising texture. Lovely.

I'd say it was well deserved. Gorgeous bread!

You're funny, Dee :) So this Matt dude is some famous photographer, huh? The bread looks great, maker or now! In fact, I'm wondering who you have tucked away under the sink. Haha.

Jude said...

Hey dee... Of course your bread is perfectly fine for this month's BBD. Looks great to me...

I wonder what adjustments the machine does when on the whole wheat setting.

You had me giggling at 'taking the pain out of your pain' hee hee. My colleagues were looking at me strangely (I'm meant to be looking at the accounts!).

I'd give anything to wake up to the smell of baking bread. Go for it, girl! And congrats on the award - that scene straight out of a glossy magazine, that's you too, you know?

Margaret said...

The bread looks wonderful. I am all for breadmakers, I've had mine years and sometimes use it only for making the dough.

Christie @ fig & cherry said...

Great combo! I've just recently experimented with polenta as a crumbing agent - but in bread? That's genius!

cindi said...

Dee this looks very good. I would love to buy a bread maker too. Congrats.

Oh my that bread looks amazing, makes me want to cut a slice to eat!!

Congrats on the award!
I have a breadmaker myself, used it a lot to bake simple day to day bread but nowadays I don't seem to use it anymore...maybe I should again... Your bread looks delicious, love the addition of polenta!

Steph said...

I love your bread, crusty outside and soft looking inside. Your pictures are really pretty! I hope you get your madeline pan, I wanted one so badly after seeing all the madelines at Harrods.

Lina said...

congrats on the award! you deserve it for sure! I wish I had a breadmaker too!

This bread looks like it has just the right texture, with the added cornmeal.

this loaf looks really good. I really like the smell of fresh bread wish i could make it at home. but all my attempts at bread making have all been a disaster :-( congats for the award you deserve it

Very cool idea for bread. I've been meaning to make a fresh loaf for a while and this certainly needs to be the one. Awesome recipe!

I love the polenta in there! Mmmm. homemade bread is the best!

Great title!

I will probably share a tweaked version of the fudge recipe to keep the real one "secret"...I have always thought Aunt Patty should sell her fudge it is that good. I would buy a loaf of that bread!

The Caked Crusader said...

I wish I could overcome my yeast phobia and make something as lovely as this...maybe one day!

Zita said...

Wow Dee, looks good & well done your bread, what brand is your new breadmaker?
I had a bad experience with my mum's breadmaker, never thought to buy one until I saw your post... now I'm going to consinder :)

The Short (dis)Order Cook said...

I haven't made bread in ages because I don't have a breadmaker and while I don't mind making bread the long way, I never have th time. I did manage to make a brioche during a snow day earlier this year, so I haven't totally reneged on my New Year's resolution ot make something with yeast this year, but I feel obligated to do it again sometime before the year is up.

This does look delicious too.

Poonam said...

Hey the bread looks awesome!

Dee said...

Hi everyone, I've been away on holiday and it's wonderful to come home to all your lovely comments! I'll stop by your blogs the minute I get my mountain of laundry sorted.

Poonam, welcome! And thank you.

The short disorder cook, you made brioche! Wow. It's been on my To Cook list forever but I'm sure I'm going to mess it up so...

Zita, I inherited the breadmaker from my late mother in law and it's a Kenwood. This was my first attempt, but I'm keen to see if I can use it just for kneading.

The caked crusader, like most wild things the trick is to not show any fear :)

Katie, don't leave out anything vital, okay?

Thanks proud italian cook!

Hey thanks Nick! Let me know if it works for you.

You, bake a disaster? Cannot believe that, Snooky doodle!

It was pretty good, Darius *she says, after her bread machine did all the work*

Thanks Abby!

Thanks Lina :)

Steph, I did! I got a lovely madeline pan, hurray! Dunno if the results will match up to Harrod's...

Thanks Linda! Time to dust off that machine now :)

Hi Rosie, it's been a while :) Thank you.

Thank you Cindi :)

Christie, I've been meaning to use polenta in my crumble too. Think I'm going to rummage through your recipes, if you don't mind :)

Margaret, must pop by for some pointers :)

Hungry for more, aren't you lovely? Thank you!

Daphne, that's really lovely :)

Thanks Sam. Honestly, I think using the machine just to knead would work better for me. Will give it a go soon.

Lol, yes it's a machine noobcook :)

Thanks Jude! I don't really know how it works. Drat, now I really want to know too...

Funny you asked, Jo. That's where I store the bread maker when it's not in use ;) Have you checked out Matt's blog? Cool, huh?

Thank you very much, Dragon!
